I recommend staying far away from this salon. All the other negative reviews are spot on! Their services are not good at all... I had been overcharged and it took me 3 calls to finally get any sort of reimbursement. DO NOT go here on your wedding day - you will surely regret it. I will not go into details but i did not feel pretty on my wedding day at all. Such a disappointment, i wish i just did my own hair and make up!
I visited the salon for the first time since owner Doug Peterson passed away and I must say I was shocked by some of the changes I saw. While the services I received were top notch, it appears the salon's new management is subtly (maybe not so subtly) implementing a "Christian" theme which I found distasteful, inappropriate and potentially offensive to a large portion of the people they serve.
There is now Christian literature in the waiting room. I also overheard both the receptionist as well as the stylist that has taken over Doug's location discuss religious issues at a volume that allowed anyone receiving a service on the floor to hear.
It also sounds as if they are playing Contemporary Christian Rock in-house now. I’m pretty sure I listened to Carrie Underwood during the majority of my visit. Whether it was one of her Christian albums or not, the new choice in music directly contradicts the upscale, cool, hip feeling this salon use to portray. With their current music selections, you would almost forget you’re in an upscale salon. I closed my eyes for a moment and half expected to find myself in a Great Clips or, worse yet, Cost Cutters when I opened them.
Aside from the salon's new Christian undertones, they've made some other poor choices as well. The last one I’ll touch on is that prior to this visit: the waiting room was located in a separate room to the side of the reception area which gave you a quit(ter), spacious area to relax and enjoy a magazine and a cup of Aveda tea while waiting for your service of choice. Now, the waiting area is crammed in to the reception / retail space. This means sitting in what is essentially the corner of a large, busy room or at the front of the store for EVERYONE to see. Either way, you’ll be forced to listen to ringing phones and a receptionist schedule appointments, sell retail, deal with angry customers and, when time permits, discuss the “good word.” You’ll also have to watch (sometimes from only a foot or two away) people shop for all their hair care needs. Definitely not the atmosphere I’d expect when going in for a day or relaxing spa services.
Again, my services were top notch, but if Shear Katz continues down the path I fear it’s on, I will have to start looking for somewhere else to spend my money. Please understand that this is not an attack on Christians or people of faith. I just feel a salon is neither the time nor place for proselytizing.
Poor and Rude Owner – I Booked 3 appointments for pedicures one for myself and two for friends at Shear Katz Salon & Day Spa, we enjoyed our appointment and pedicures. However, I experienced some issues after mine. It was very red between my toes and they became very itchy. So, I decided to go to the Doctor and find out what was going on after a week of my feet being red and itchy. I was told that I had picked up athletes foot from the spas pedicure tub. I was not very happy to find this out. I called Shear Katz Salon and they told me that they would talk to the owner. When I got a call back from a girl that worked there she left a message, very bitchy, she said that they have always properly cleaned their tubs after every client. I went online to find that there were other people that had experienced the same issue, six to be exact. I know I will never be recommending Shear Katz Salon & Day Spa to any of my friends, nor will I ever set foot and pay for a service they have to offer. If that's the way the owner wants to do business, he won't be in business for long!
WORST HAIRCUT I HAVE EVER HAD!!!! – I'm guessing that this salon for the most part performs it's services for females. But being a male in Duluth looking for a place to get a haircut and not having any other options, found myself walking in to this particular establishment to see if they could give me a simple short hair "guy" haircut. They were not busy (now I can see why) so they put me right in a chair. I thought it was strange the way the stylist was cutting my hair but thought that she was the professional and knew what she was doing. When it was all over the price was $8 higher than I was expecting and when I got home my wife noticed the stylist left several long hairs around my ears, the cut was not straight and it looked like she used garden shears to cut the top. After inspecting it myself, it is the worst haircut I have ever had. I believe my stylists name was Kirby. If your a male in Duluth do not go here, it is obvious they do not know how to cut your hair. It's better to wait or drive out of town to get it done somewhere else. Furthermore, I believe any professional stylist should be skilled enough to give a male a decent looking haircut. How hard can it be?
BRIDES- do not go here with your bridal party! – I can't believe this is an Aveda salon and I would not recommend going here, especially if you are considering this for your wedding day.
I will first say that I really liked the end result, however, it's a good thing I let a lot go the day before and the day of. For my trail run the day before, the hairstylist commented on drinking too much the night before, hence the shaky hands during my mani and pedi and the reason I was 2 hours late that day! Yes, I was late for our rehearsal dinner, and I showed up with makeup covering not 1, but 2 burn marks on my forehead from the curling iron! Yes, she burnt me the day before my wedding. (And, she also said she had to call a client back and came back to curl my hair smelling of cigarette smoke.) So, a great lack of professionalism that day. The next day, my hairstylist was much better, but the owner's lack of professionalism was more than apparent. There were 14 of us getting our hair done, one of the hairstylists couldn't show up, yet the owner never approached me or any of us to let us know they were short a hairstylist and they would be running late, so the little girls could come at a different time instead of having to wait for over an hour- and several others did too. I was also an hour later than expected on the day of the wedding. One thing a bride doesn't need on her wedding day is more stress, worrying about covering burn marks on her forehead is unexceptable, running a total of 3 hours late in two days, the lack of professionalism established, or lack thereof from the owner is no way to run a salon, let alone one with the name Aveda attached to it.
Brides- do not make your day anymore stressful, this salon does not meet the expectations of an Aveda salon or a well-managed hair salon.
Not Recommended – I have visited this salon twice for different services so I could write a fair review. My first experience was for brow waxing. Despite explaining exactly what I was looking for, the stylist was not particularly responsive. I asked for my brows to be trimmed, and she didn't do it. She also lost my arch and left my brows uneven as the only way to correct this would have been to overwax the brow. I left dissatisfied. I gave the salon another chance by getting a haircut. The stylist cut far more length from my hair than we had discussed (at least 2" more in some areas). Technically speaking, the cut is nice, its just not what I had wanted. I didn't care for the professionalism of this stylist, as she pushed hair color a lot despite my commenting several times that I was very happy with my current color. The cut was $15 more than what was quoted by phone at booking; I believe the receptionist quoted the starting rate for a cut and scheduled me with a more senior stylist - this would have been fine had I known at the time of booking.
The salon has a nice atmosphere, the location is kind of difficult to get to. The receptionists are courteous and the salon is clean. The services just didn't meet my expectations.
FACT – In response to the second review made about shearkatz in 2008.
Im a former employee of the salon and yes i no longer work there, but im still going to back up my previous place of employment and my work as a professional. As an aveda trained esthetican and massage therapist I was trained a certain way on how to do a facial, yes you can switch it up client to client but when working in an aveda salon "they" like you to keep a routine, so If you are someone who wants more massage with a facial you request that in your consult which i do with EVERY client. ultimately you are there for a facial not a massage so most of your time will be from the shoulders on up.
MASK- the masks that we use are a form of clay...alot of times they leave a resido from where the towel thats wrapped around your head meets your hairline even if you think you got all of it wiped away.
TIME- i was blocked out for 45 min 15 min for clean up.
Overall I think its a great place to go for a service. And if you arnt happy which MOST people are then they will refund you either in another service or money back.
Delightful time. – When I arrived to this salon and spa I was delightfully tickled. I hadnt been to Duluth before. My husband and I saved our money for a small get away vacation so while he was upstairs at the brewhouse nursing a beer I was downstairs getting pampered.
I requested a full day spa which included a half hour facial, a manicure, pedicure, hot stone massage and I got my hair done :) The facial was soothing, the esthetician obviously knew what she was doing. I felt kind of bad, I asked her a lot of questions about the products but she didnt seem to mind. The hot stone massage was my favorite! The thereapist did a good job making sure the stones weren't too hot and that I was comfortable. The manicure and pedicure were fun! I was excited that they had OPI nail polishes! The same girl who did my facial also did my hair. It wasn't anything fancy (l usually get my hair colored at home with some blond highlights) but she did an amazing job styling my hair!
So since my experience was so positive, I'm confused as to the review Spaluv gave Shear Katz. I was given a tour of the spa and didnt see any cots or rooms where they have color. In my facial the technician stayed with me the whole time, there was no timer. When my masks were on she not only massaged my sore neck but my hands as well. My pedicure was very relaxing. I was taken to a seperate pedicure area and the girl did a great job painting my toes (I'm semi high maintanence about my toe nail polish). During my experience there was always someone there to either make sure I was comfortable or that I had tea (I LOVE Aveda tea, I wanted to buy some but since I'm traveling I decided to go to an aveda salon closer to where I live)
Their full day spa package is the best deal I found in town! No where else offered as many options or as low prices as Shear Katz did.
This was an amazing spa experience. Thank you Shear Katz for making me feel so pampered and refreshed :)
facial on an egg timer. enough said. – I've never submitted a review here...but when I ran across the 5 stars reviews I felt I had to.
Over a year ago, I went to Shear Katz for a facial and they put me on a cot in a storage closet. A young woman came in every few minutes to apply product to my face...then she set met to an egg timer and left. All the while people were coming in and out to grab color or perms or whatnot. You can only imagine how relaxing this was.
pedicures are not much better.
Perhaps I would be okay with this if they had bargain basement prices. But that is far from the case.
I will say I had a reasonably okay experience getting an up-do there. It didn't turn out exactly as I wanted but it was professional looking and the stylist was really making an effort to get it right.
But after the facial experience I'll never go back.
There are waaaayyyy better options in Duluth.
Faithful Client – I have been a client of Doug Peterson and his team at Shear Katz for over 15 years. Every visit I have is great. Doug and his team are always on top of the latest trends and his therapists in the spa are out of this world! I know because my husband and I travel year round and I favor Shear Katz over any other, anywhere! They are friendly, "Minnesota Nice" and have given nothing but the best for over a decade for me. Thanks Doug!
