The Scene
There are towering displays of beer, wine and liquor bottles. Signs, posters and paraphernalia occupy the windows, walls and bathroom stalls. It's got a hopping bar and a menu that's as heterogeneous as the decor. This famous place, which sponsors its namesake marathon, is almost a cliched must-stop for Twin Citians making a Lake Superior pilgrimage.
The Food
Some people never get beyond the deep-fried appetizers, but this restaurant actually has a huge menu with lots of goodies. A dozen sandwich choices include a triple-decker Monte Cristo and Dante's Inferno. Pastas and salads abound: spaghetti and meatballs, Oriental chicken salad, and chicken and wild rice salad with creamy pepper dressing. The messy, double-patty bicycle burger is topped with grilled onions, mushrooms and three cheeses. Steaks, ribs and seafood also are featured.

I would send tourists here because it's been made famous by the marathon, but if I lived in Duluth or visited on a regular basis like my family does, it's not worth the hype. The food is good, but nothing to write home about.

Grandma's- and every other store in the Grandma's chain I've tried - Little Angie's, G's Sports Bar, American Grill or whatever it is by the mall, Grandma's West Duluth Cafe, and others- is overpriced tourist food. If you are a tourist coming to Duluth and want to sample what the locals have to offer, avoid Grandma's. I haven't tried Belisio's yet, however, and reserve judgement- I'm certainly willing to try it. I've been to the other Grandma's places a few times each and have been always disapointed. Usually what happens is that some relative of mine is visiting, and they want to go to Grandma's. I tried it at first, and some of the other parts of the Grandma's Empire, not knowing what else they owned. My experience has been the same all around- overpriced items (big portions, though) and very bland food. Nothing unique or tasty on the menu. Even Perkin's tries harder it seems. They have cheap beer for the college kids too, which keeps at least a certain section of those living in Duluth showing up when the tourists are gone. Just about anything is better than Grandma's. Seriously. Even Perkins. PROS: Cheap beer, omnipresent CONS: All around suckiness

This place I have to say is fun. I recommend going at least once!! Yes its busy and the seating time is always a wait.. But The Scooner Sundaes are huge and delicious the food is pretty good, mostly average depending on what you order! But I think its the atmosphere that attracts people.. Its by the pier and its always fun there!! Yes sometimes you dont always get the best service from your waiter. It really depends on their mood! sometimes you can get the funnest one! So at least go and try it! I always go back when Im in Duluth!
